Apache tears (Marekanite) are rounded pebbles of obsidian or “obsidianites” a dark coloured natural volcanic glass. Slightly softer than Obsidian due the speckles of Perlite which can make it translucent.
The name “Apache tear” comes from a legend of the Apache Native Americans. in the 1870s, 75 Apaches and the US Cavalry fought on a mountain overlooking Superior, Arizona. Facing defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths rather than be captured. According to legend, the Apache tribe women mourned day and night for a month after learning of the tragedy with their tears turning to stone upon hitting the ground.
Some believe that those who possess an Apache Tear will never cry again because the Apache women cried enough for all that mourn.
