
Quartz is a stone composed of oxygen and silicon atoms that has crystallised around magma or hydrothermal vents. It is the most abundant mineral on planet earth and can be found in every country on earth in the form of points, masses, grains, prisms and even threaded. In 300 BCE Theophrastus (pupil of Aristotle) gave the stone the name kristallos. from the word “ice” high lighting the ancient belief that Quartz was encapsulated in ice. The modern name “Quartz” comes from the German word “Quarz” from the Polish kwardy.

Chinese Medicine dating back 5,000 years, incorporates crystals for as part of the healing processes. The Japanese equivalent word for clear quartz translates as ‘perfect jewel’ because they believed it symbolised space, purity and patience.

During the time of Tiberius 42 BCE-37 CE, two Ancient Roman writers, Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella and Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder) both wrote about the first specularia or Roman Greenhouse. Roman Greenhouses “consisted of beds mounted on wheels which they moved out into the sun and then on wintry days withdrew under the cover of frames, glazed with transparent stone or mica.”
Clear quartz is included in the legends and the creation myths of many ancient cultures. In both Australia and South America, the creation myths involve a cosmic serpent who is the creator of life and who was led by a clear quartz crystal. in Australian Aboriginal mythology the substance most identified as maban which the Shamans and elders drew their magical powers.
Some cultures of central and Southern America clear quartz was seen as a vessel for the spirits of their ancestors.
In Scotland and Ireland clear quartz was carved into spheres and used for healing. Like the spheres of crystal today and the ones used by fortune tellers.
In the 17th century Nicolas Steno discovered that no matter the size or shape, Quartz will always meet at a 60 degree angle.
