Ruby Zoisite also known as Anyolite, was first discovered in Longido mining district of the Kilimanjaro mountains in Tanzania during 1949 by Tom Belvins. He one of the largest Ruby deposits in the world with Zoisite encasing this red gem. Ruby zoisite is a colourful metamorphic rock that combines crystals of red corundum with green zoisite. Black inclusions of hornblende (amphibole) are often present. It’s other name Anyolite is derived from the Masai word meaning green and its only found in the one location.
Ruby zoisite is often confused with ruby in fuchsite which can have a very similar appearance. The vast majority comes from southern India. With it more being readily available it’s also considerably cheaper.
