A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract made by soaking plant matter in an alcohol solution. Herbs, roots, or leaves are steeped in a solution pull out active health compounds. Alcohol acts as a preservative so the liquid stays potent for years. Because of its potency, only a few small drops are taken on or under the tongue. Unlike standard sleep tinctures that focus purely on heavy sedation or tackling insomnia, dream tinctures are crafted to support lucid dreaming, dream recall, and vivid imagery, often paired with nervous system relaxants to maintain deep, uninterrupted sleep. This simple guide will show you how to make herbal dream tinctures.
Menstruum types and usage
Menstruum is a liquid that dissolves a solid or holds it in suspension, functioning as a solvent. The most common and effective menstruum to use in tinctures is high-proof alcohol (e.g. vodka or Ethanol), often mixed with distilled water. Common Types of Menstruums are:
- Alcohol (Ethanol): The gold standard for true tinctures. It extracts both water-soluble and fat-soluble plant constituents (like resins and alkaloids) and preserves the final preparation for years. Neutral spirits like 80-to-100 proof vodka (40% to 50% ABV) work well for most dried herbs.
- Vegetable Glycerin: Used to make glycerites instead of traditional alcohol-based tinctures. It is sweet, alcohol-free, and ideal for children, but it does not extract resins or certain alkaloids as effectively as alcohol.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Used to make herbal vinegar’s (or oxymels when mixed with honey). Vinegar is great for extracting minerals, but it has a shorter shelf life than alcohol and often requires refrigeration
Dream Tincture Formulation (1:5 Dry Herb to Menstruum Ratio)
This formulation combines traditional oneirogens (dream herbs) with gentle nervines to prevent restless awakenings or morning grogginess.
| Botanical Ingredient | Proportion | Therapeutic & Oneirogenic Role |
| Dried Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) | 2 parts (30 g) | Core oneirogen*; enhances visual vividness, conscious awareness, and dream recall. |
| Dried Blue Lotus Petals (Nymphaea caerulea) | 1.5 parts (22.5 g) | Contains nuciferine* and aporphine*; induces mild euphoria, calm, and hypnagogic depth. |
| Dried Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) | 1 part (15 g) | Boosts GABAergic* activity; quiets circular thinking and maintains deep sleep architecture. |
| Dried Chamomile Flowers (Matricaria chamomilla) | 0.5 part (7.5 g) | Eases physical tension and softens the bitter edge of mugwort. |
| Total dry herbs and menstruum | Dried herbs = 75g Menstruum 375 ml of 40%–50% ABV neutral spirit (80–100 proof vodka or brandy). Alcohol-Free Alternative: 280 ml food-grade vegetable glycerin mixed with 95 ml distilled water (maceration requires 6 to 8 weeks). |
Method
1. Weigh and Prepare Botanicals:
Weigh out dried herbs using a kitchen scale. Lightly crumble whole flower heads and leaves between your fingers or pulse them 2–3 times in a clean coffee grinder to increase surface area without turning them into a powder.
2. Combine Herbs and Menstruum in Glass Jar
Ensure complete submersion to prevent mould growth.
Place the prepared botanicals into a clean 500 ml wide-mouth glass mason jar. Pour 375 ml of alcohol over the herbs. Stir thoroughly with a clean stainless-steel or glass utensil to dislodge trapped air bubbles, ensuring all plant material is completely submerged under at least 2 cm of liquid.
3. Macerate for 4 to 6 Weeks
Seal the jar with an airtight lid (if using a metal lid, place a piece of parchment paper underneath to prevent alcohol corrosion). Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Store in a dark cabinet and shake the jar once daily for the first 2 weeks, then 2–3 times per week thereafter to keep the menstruum saturated.
4. Press and Strain the Tincture
After 4 to 6 weeks, place a fine-mesh sieve lined with double-layered unbleached cheesecloth or a nut-milk bag over a large glass measuring bowl. Pour the mixture through and twist the cloth tightly, squeezing with firm pressure to extract every drop of concentrated liquid. Discard or compost the spent marc (plant matter).
5. Bottle, Label, and Store
Funnel the strained tincture into dark amber or cobalt glass dropper bottles (50 ml or 100 ml). Clearly label each bottle with the botanical formula, alcohol percentage, and date of pressing. Store in a cool, dark location.
Dosage & Application
- Standard Dose: Take 10 to 30 drops (approx. 0.5 to 1.5 ml) directly under the tongue or diluted in 30 ml of warm water 20 to 30 minutes before bed.
- Bedside Placement: Keep a dream journal and pen directly beside the bed to record impressions immediately upon waking, before physical movement dissipates dream recall.
- Cycling Schedule: Use for 2 to 3 consecutive nights per week (e.g., weekends or intentional ritual work). Continuous nightly use can lead to receptor downregulation and fragmented sleep.
- Shelf Life: Alcohol-based tinctures remain fully potent for 3 to 5 years when stored in dark glass away from heat.
Contraindications & Safety
- Pregnancy & Nursing: Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Mugwort stimulates pelvic blood flow and uterine contractions.
- Interactions: Do not combine with prescription sedatives, sleep medications, or alcohol.
- Sensitivity Warning: If dreams become uncomfortably intense or cause frequent waking, reduce the dosage by half or suspend use.
Definitions
Oneirogen An oneirogen is a drug that induces a dream-like state of consciousness
Nuciferine  is naturally found in the leaves of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) and the blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). Studied for anti-obesity and lipid-lowering properties. May help improve blood sugar levels and reduce hyperlipidemia. Investigated for sedative, hypnotic and antipsychotic-like properties. Exhibits potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
aporphine The Nymphaea species, particularly Nymphaea caerulea, contains aporphine. Extracts of this plant when ingested or smoked in high doses are reported to produce euphoria and hallucinations. Commonly known as the blue lotus, Nymphaea caerulea is available in several forms, including dried plant material, teas etc.
GABAergic Signalling slows down brain activity and reduces nerve cell hyperactivity, helping to control anxiety, stress, and fear.
