Brown Banded Agate remains one of my most popular stones. I usually keep plenty in stock, including these smaller specimens that fit easily in a pocket or bag. They work well for grid work and also as a bra crystal.
Composed of silicon dioxide, this agate has a glassy (vitreous) lustre and frequently appears in brooches and pins. Its acid resistance makes it ideal for mortars and pestles used to press and blend chemicals.
Agates form in molten rock cavities as gas bubbles in solidifying lava give way to alkali and silica-bearing solutions. These stones develop as banded nodules, resembling tree rings—known as Riband Agate.
