Dulcote Agate properties and lore

Dulcote agate a
Dulcote agate a

There are more than 100 different types of agate (a variety of Chalcedony in itself) and Dulcote agate is another remarkable specimen.  Also known as Potato agate, it is found in the area in and around the Dulcote Quarry, near Wells in Somerset.

Unlike many agates which are formed through volcanic activity, Dulcote is formed through the cavities in the rock being filled over time with silica-rich water which crystallise, forming bands or layers of unusual colours and textures. The often intricate patterns and colours formed can vary greatly, ranging from earthy tones to eye catching combinations of red, orange, yellow, brown and white.

Agates unique patterns, colours and hardness make it a popular choice for jewellery. Being relatively rare, Dulcote Agate is often polished into various shapes and forms, including cabochons, beads. The Dulcote quarry has now closed making the specimens harder to source and because of this relative rareness, Dulcote agate is a popular display piece with crystal and rock enthusiasts.

All agates are believed to possess metaphysical properties especially grounding, stability, and balance. Agate is often used by crystal healers to promote emotional well-being and inner strength.

Malachite

Malachite specimen MALI
Malachite specimen MALI

Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral that forms in unusual swirling patterns. named after the Greek word “malache”(mallow), after its green colour. Malachite commonly occurs with Azurite and Chrysocolla grown within or on top. The rare Eilat stone is a combination of Malachite, Chrysocolla, and Turquoise. The stunning malachite is known as “peacock eyes” because of its unique ring-like patterns.

Malachite was mined in the Sinai and eastern deserts of ancient Egypt from as early as 3000BC. for eye paint, a pigment for wall painting, jewellery and ornaments and in glazes and the colouring of glass. Malachite was worn as an amulet to shield the bearer from harmful ideas and ominous spirits. It earned its nickname “God stone” among the ancient Egyptians. This stone is associated with life after this world and fertility.

In the Middle Ages, Malachite was used for protection of the evil eye and as “medicine” for stomach ailments.

It was worn in Italy as protection against the ‘evil eye’. Reputed to protect against the Evil Eye, witchcraft, and evil spirits.

Malachite is one of the most important minerals for protecting against negative energies. It fills our auric fields with positivity, while simultaneously pushing all the negativity outwards. Malachite is known to create a “cloak of invisibility” around the user. This will remove you from certain confrontations and make you less susceptible to negative energies. This stone also helps with emotional balance, especially during times when people around you put their “baggage” on you. Malachite offers the willpower to confront and get past any emotional and physical blockage happening in your current life. Lastly, it helps people who lack self-confidence and self-responsibility. This powerful mineral assists in making progress on your spiritual journey and is a must-have for anyone who is constantly working on themselves. Malachite opens the heart and will allow for balance on all levels.

Malachite harmonises with any other copper-based minerals such as Azurite, Turquoise, Chrysocolla, Shattuckite, Ajoite. For additional protection, Tiger Eye and Jet work very well with Malachite. Morganite is a commonly used stone with Malachite when working on emotional balance and harmonising the Heart.

Malachite is related to the Heart Chakra. However, it is also helpful to clear and activate other chakras. Placed on the Third Eye, it activates visualisation and psychic vision. Placed on the Solar Plexus, it facilitates deep emotional healing, releasing negative experiences and old traumas.

The Heart Chakra is located near the centre of the breastbone. When the Heart Chakra is out of balance you may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship and become critical of the annoying habits of others.

Malachite absorbs negative energy very easily but does not release it. It is very important to constantly cleanse and clear your Malachite pieces, especially if you are someone who wears or carries them every day.

High Atlas Mountain Jasper

High Atlas Mountain
Moroccan marble a

A striking and unusual stone with fantastic designs and colours that lead us to see images within patterns of the stone.

The stone comes from the High Atlas Mountains range that crosses from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia that mark the boundary between the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans and the Sahara Desert. The Atlas range is renowned for its wide range of stones, minerals, metals and fossils.

Although called High Atlas Mountain Jasper, technically this stone is a type of fine-grained and very hard, Siltstone, a sedimentary rock and hence has many earthy colours; browns, rust reds, oranges, creams etc. The almost metallic brown and red veins running through this stone are Iron compounds. High Atlas Mountain jasper is an Earth element stone one of the four fundamental elements (Fire, Water, and Air) which form the universe’s building blocks. The Earth element represents stability, abundance and grounding, nurturing, and supporting personal growth and transformation. Naturally the earth element is part of the Base / Root chakra and High Atlas Mountain Jasper can be used to align and clear this chakra.
